    Chapter Three

  • PANEL 1: Nathan hunches forward, holding up a finger as he speaks. His eyes are cut off by the frame. NATHAN: My one rule is this: PANEL 2: Nathan looks down at Joey, still holding up a finger. NATHAN: You stay behind me and do whatever you can to keep yourself safe. PANEL 3: Nathan has a serious expression on his face. NATHAN: I know this seems like fun for you-- PANEL 4: Nathan looks down, the background darkening. NATHAN: --but it can get really dangerous. PANEL 5: Joey rolls his eyes and waves his hand dismissively, putting his other hand on his hip. Nathan doesn't look amused by this. The elevator dings overhead. JOEY: Yeah, yeah, I got it! Relax! What's the worst that could happen? PANEL 6: The elevator doors slide open.

  • PANEL 1: Joey rushes ahead into the room, staring up in awe. Nathan runs after him. We can see a plaque and portrait nearby, though we don't see what's on either of them. JOEY: Whoa... NATHAN: JOJO! PANEL 2: We see a wide shot of the room. It's a GIGANTIC library filled to the brim with books, There's a large skid mark going down the center floorboards. There's multiple floors to this library, and there's someone standing on a level above Nathan and Joey, staring down at them. We can't get a good look at them in the deep shadows. They lean on the railing in front of them in a relaxed manner.

  • PANEL 1: Nathan and Joey approach the portrait and plaque. The portrait portrays Andy Fortune, an older caucasain man with curly red hair and a mustache. He wears a red robe and white button up, black pants, and brown office shoes. He holds a pen in one hand and an open book in the other. He's being showered by floating papers and has a spotlight shining on him. Joey reads out the plaque. NATHAN: Another one of those portraits... JOEY: Andy Fortune, Spec: Storyteller. Andy was a wise man, a kind father, and a gentle soul. Late that night, he was working away, drifting off until the light of day. PANEL 2: Joey stares down at the plaque. Behind him, the background depicts two figures, one colored red and the other colored wine purple. The purple figure holds up a machette covered in blood with a crazed smile. The red figure lays on the ground, looking up in fear. Joey continues reading, looking uneasy. JOEY: Little did he know, that with a sly grin, this is when our guest would do him in. PANEL 3: The duo stares up at the portrait in confusion. Joey looks upset. NATHAN: Did she make one of these for every family member? PANEL 4: Joey looks down at the ground with a confused expression on his face. JOEY: Maybe...? But these are all so...sad. That's not a nice way to remember someone...

  • PANEL 1: Nathan puts a finger to his chin, thinking. NATHAN: Let's just..find Esther, maybe he can explain what's going on. PANEL 2: Joey keeps starring up at the portrait, eyes wide. NATHAN: The question is where to start... PANEL 3: Joey looks over his shoulder, a bright glow surrounding his head. PANEL 4: We focus on the torn up flooring going through the library. PANEL 5: Joey turns around, looking surprised to see this. PANEL 6: Joey gets a mischievous smile. The teddy bear in his pocket matches the smile. JOEY: ...I think I have a pretty good idea.

  • PANEL 1: Joey and Nathan follow the torn up boards through the library, walking between maze-like bookshelves. Nathan takes the lead, looking around suspiciously. PANEL 2: Nathan continues through the maze, gaze faced forward in determination. PANEL 3: Joey looks behind them, hands grasped together, an uneasy expression on his face. PANEL 4: Nathan sticks a hand out. NATHAN: Wait. PANEL 5: The two are looking out from behind a bookshelf. JOEY: What-- NATHAN: SHUSH! PANEL 6: Hiding behind the bookshelves, Nathan nods to something off screen.

  • PANEL 1: We see that these bookshelves open up into an office. There's a desk, a painting on the wall, and even more bookshelves. Most notably, though, there's someone standing in the office holding something. PANEL 2: We see that this someone is Andy Fortune, looking down at a book in his hands. He looks unnerved. PANEL 3: Nathan looks back to Joey, whispering. NATHAN: Can you see him too? In response, Joey nods. NATHAN: Right, stay put. PANEL 4: Nathan starts walking towards Andy. PANEL 5: Nathan, reaching a hand out for Andy, looks concerned. Andy jumps when he hears him. NATHAN: Mr.Fortune, is everything okay--

  • PANEL 1: Nathan puts a hand on Andy's shoulder, who turns around in surprise. Andy has a scar over his left eye. PANEL 2: Andy grabs Nathan's wrist. PANEL 3: Andy slams Nathan down on the desk behind him. PANEL 4: Nathan collapses to the floor, gripping his head in pain. NATHAN: SON OF A BITCH--!! PANEL 5: Andy runs away. PANEL 6: Andy runs past Joey, who rushes into the room. We see that Andy has dropped the book he was holding. JOEY: NATHAN!!!

  • PANEL 1: Joey kneels next to Nathan. Nathan rubs the side of his head. JOEY: Are you-?! NATHAN: I'm fine, mijo. I've been knocked on my ass plenty of times. PANEL 2: Joey looks worried. JOEY: Has he ever done that before? PANEL 3: Nathan gestures with a hand as he speaks, still holding the side of his head with his other hand. NATHAN: No, and...he shouldn't be able to, either. Neither should Esther, come to think of it... PANEL 4: Nathan puts his hands on his knees. Joey looks even more worried. NATHAN: Touching inanimate objects, possession, using their Specs-- all that's possible, but spirits can't touch the living by themselves.

  • PANEL 1: Joey picks up the book Andy dropped. It's titled A Murder of Morals and Mayhem by Arthur Nguyen. JOEY: He dropped this thing too. PANEL 2: He hands it to Nathan. NATHAN: Let me see. PANEL 3: We see the back of the book in Nathan's hands. It has an about the author section, including a shadowy portrait of the author. We can only see that he has curly hair pulled up into a bun, though. PANEL 4: Nathan stares down at the book, confused. NATHAN: This...is something that came out recently. How would he have gotten this? PANEL 5: Joey looks very excited. JOEY: Maybe it was an offering! We should go ask him about it! PANEL 6: Nathan stands, walking back through the library maze. Joey trots up behind him. Nathan can't help but smile. NATHAN: Priorities, Jojo. I think he went further down.
