Chapter: Chapter 03


  • PANEL 1: The elevator doors open. PANEL 2: We see Joey and Nathan entering a blacksmith workshop. There's a table with an anvil off to the side, multiple barrels, a shield hung up on the wall, buckets, swords, furnaces, among other blacksmith's tools. At the center of the room is a pillar with another plaque and portrait. The plaque has the name Emily Fortune on it. The portrait depicts Emily working on a sword with red gems embedded in its hilt. She smiles proudly at her work. Emily is a white woman with curly dark red hair, she's muscular and is wearing a simple green shirt, a blacksmiths apron, grey pants, and work boots.

  • PANEL 1: Nathan and Joey walk further into the room, behind them we see more weaponry hung up on the wall. This includes a shield decorated with sunbeams, a harp, and arrows. Nathan looks around while Joey stares up at the portrait in awe. NATHAN: Aaand this room wasn't like this before, either... PANEL 2: We see the plaque up close, revealing Emily's Spec which is Smith. PANEL 3: Joey looks down as he reads out the plaque. JOEY: Emily Fortune had many a weapon made, famous for her skill with any blade. PANEL 4: A worms eye view of Nathan walking through the smithery. Above him, a figure sits in the rafters staring down at him. Joey keeps reading the plaque offscreen. JOEY: She fought until the very end-- PANEL 5: We see the figure up close, it's Emily Fortune. She has a scar over her left eye. She looks nervous. JOEY, off screen: --but even then...

  • PANEL 1: Emily jumps down from the rafters. PANEL 2: Nathan, hearing her jump down, swings around. PANEL 3: Nathan swings his lantern back at Emily. PANEL 4: Emily lands, grabbing Nathan's lantern and jerking it forward. This causes Nathan to stumble as Emily leans closer to him. The two look as though Emily is dipping Nathan in a dance, though she's still keeping both hands on his lantern. They stare at each other intensely.

  • PANEL 1: Joey recoils upon seeing what's happening. JOEY: NATHAN!!! PANEL 2: He looks around in a panic. JOEY: What do I do?! I-I don't wanna hurt her-- PANEL 3: Joey turns around and spots the shield on the wall. PANEL 4: We see a close up of the shield. It has a harp, sunrays, and two arrows on its front. PANEL 5: Joey reaches for it. PANEL 6: Joey grabs it, rushing forward with his eyes clenched closed. He holds the shield out in front of him. JOEY: STAY AWAY FROM MY UNCLE!!!

  • PANEL 1: Joey slams into Emily with the shield. PANEL 2: Emily crashes to the floor. PANEL 3: She sits up, rubbing the side of her head. PANEL 4: Nathan's lantern is suddenly shoved in her face, making her jump.

  • PANEL 1: Nathan hovers over Emily, holding his lantern staff to her throat. NATHAN: Emily, what's going on? Where's the rest of your family? PANEL 2: Emily says nothing, staring up at Nathan in fear. PANEL 3: She clenches her eyes closed, and suddenly she begins glitching out Her hair turns brown and starts getting longer in the front, her clothes are also changing from green to blue. PANEL 4: Emily fully transforms into Esther. Esther recoils back, staring up at Nathan in terror. The scar on Emily's left eye does not disappear with this transformation. Nathan jerks the lantern away in shock. PANEL 5: This panel is Nathan overlayed on top of the previous panel, staring down at Esther in surprise. NATHAN: Esther--!?

  • PANEL 1: While Nathan's distracted, Esther scrambles to his feet. PANEL 2: Esther runs past Nathan. PANEL 3: He runs into the elevator, Nathan realizes whats happening and turns around. PANEL 4: The two stare after Esther in shock, Nathan puts his lantern at the ready. JOEY: H-HOW DID HE DO THAT?! NATHAN: I don't know, but that CAN'T be Esther! Let's go! We can't lose them!

  • PANEL 1: The elevator doors open to a new floor. PANEL 2: We see the floor, it's decorated with cardboard standees of things like trees, a train station, and directional signs. There's a wall with a portrait hung up on it and a plaque in front. Nathan rushes onto this floor, Joey on the other hand is more drawn to the portrait. The plaque reads Sarah Fortune. PANEL 3: Nathan looks around while Joey looks at the plaque. NATHAN: Where the hell did they go!?

  • PANEL 1: Joey stares up at the portrait, looking uneasy as he reads out the plaque.. JOEY: Sarah Fortune. Spec Transport. PANEL 2: We see the portrait in full. It depicts Sarah Fortune, an older woman with large round glasses, pale skin, blue eyes, and curly brown hair. She's wearing a purple train conductor's uniform. Sarah is holding a big map and smiling widely. JOEY: Lover of travel and master of the earth, mother Sarah took her time coming back. One step through the door, just a minute late, but that didn't stop him from delivering her fate. PANEL 3: Nathan keeps looking around. PANEL 4: Finally, he spots something in the distance. Whatever it is, he looks utterly baffled upon seeing it. PANEL 5: Joey looks over at Nathan as Nathan shouts off screen. NATHAN: WHAT THE HELL?!

  • PANEL 1: We see a life-sized, fully functioning train about to leave station. The person disguised as Esther is rushing to it. PANEL 2: The mimic grabs the train door. PANEL 2: They slowly turn around, transforming again as they do. PANEL 3: They look back at Nathan, their appearance now mimicking Sarah Fortune's. Even as Sarah, they still have that scar over their eye. PANEL 4: Joey looks baffled, Nathan slaps his hand to his forehead in exasperation. JOEY: A train--?! NATHAN: For fucks sake, Lizzie! PANEL 5: Nathan gets his lantern ready. NATHAN: AFTER THEM.
