    Chapter Eight

  • PANEL 1: Nathan turns fully to face the group. He looks distressed as he shouts Who was that?! PANEL 2: Eddie reaches a hand out to Nathan, slow and gentle. He says Nathan, hey-- PANEL 3: Nathan flinches away, hugging himself, and he shouts Don't touch me! Eddie pulls his hand back in surprise. PANEL 4: Nathan turns back to face the rubble, we can only see the lower half of his face. Nathan says We need to keep going. That-- that bastard could burst through the rubble at any moment. The others look at Nathan in concern, except for the Spirit, who stares at him almost annoyed.

  • PANEL 1: Nathan walks away from the group. He is colored in a dark purple, while the rest of the group is colored in continuously lighter colors. Eddie is the darkest, then the spirit, and Mai is the lightest. PANEL 2: Eddie steps forward, a concerned look on his face. PANEL 3: Mai puts a hand on Eddie's shoulder. PANEL 4: Eddie turns to face Mai, who says to him Be- Be careful, he's... PANEL 4: Mai's Spec activates. She's colored green and is surrounded by purple bubbles. She says God, that's a lot, okay-- PANEL 5: Eddie nods, looking determined.

  • PANEL 1: The spirit floats next to Mai, asking her You okay, Dolly? PANEL 2: With her Spec active, Mai grits her teeth and sighs. PANEL 3: She puts her headphones on and says I will be. PANEL 4: Mai begins following Nathan and Eddie, her Spec slowly fading out. We see the spirit is colored in red under her Spec view. He is surrounded by red cracks.

  • PANEL 1: Eddie catches up with Nathan, the others trailing behind him. He says Nate, you can't go running off like that! You know it's not safe. PANEL 2: Nathan ignores him. He looks over his shoulder and says Mai. PANEL 3: He turns and points directly at her, making her tense up. Nathan says You have some explaining to do. PANEL 4: Mai puts her hands together, holding her radio close and looking down in shame. She says Cap'n, I-- PANEL 5: The spirit pushes past Mai, putting a hand on her head which inadvertently causes it to sink into her. It's like he's possessing her. Mai reacts to this in surprise, but the Spirit doesn't seem to notice. He points accusingly at Nathan, saying Hey, she doesn't have to explain shit to you!

  • PANEL 1: Nathan points at the spirit. And you, he says, What's your name? The spirit crosses his arms and replies Oh, like you give a damn. PANEL 2: Nathan turns on his heel, waving his hand as he walks away. He says You're right, maybe I shouldn't. Because you should be leaving. PANEL 3: Eddie tries to gently approach Nathan, softly saying Nathan-- PANEL 4: Nathan turns around again and cuts Eddie off. He shouts I was talkin' to a ghost, Pierce! You saw that purple light, that's our kidnapper! They just chased us down and tried to get their hands on him! He should phase through the wall and get out of here!

  • PANEL 1: The spirit looks annoyed, saying Yeah, well, I ain't doin' that! Nathan replies Why not?! PANEL 2: The spirit gestures at Mai, saying Cause I can keep 'em away from you! Dolly here will tell ya, my Spec can distract 'em! PANEL 3: Mai nervously looks away, but affirms by replying That's...true. It's smoggy, though. Very hard to breathe around. PANEL 4: Nathan looks back at Mai, suspicious. He asks Wait, you can hear him? PANEL 5: He turns to fully face Mai, asking How can you--? PANEL 6: Nathan looks down and sees the spirit box in Mai's hand.

  • PANEL 1: Mai nervously holds out her spirit box. She says It's a uh...a spirit box. PANEL 2: Nathan stares down at it intensely. He says I know that. Why do you have that? PANEL 3: Mai holds it close, starting to shake with anxiety. She says I made it! Vibes can apply to sound waves, so... PANEL 4: Mai shrinks into herself, continuing with I figured I could make a spirit box that actually works..? PANEL 5: Nathan towers over Mai, dropping his lantern in surprise. He says You were ghost hunting?!

  • PANEL 1: Mai looks down in shame as Nathan says to her Mai, this is way too dangerous for you to get involved in! What were you thinking?! You need to leave this to the professionals-- PANEL 2: The spirit pushes past Mai again, snapping back with Professional my ass! There ain't nothin' professional about you, Vargas! PANEL 3: Nathan looks at the spirit, annoyed. He says Okay, seriously, what is your problem?! PANEL 4: The spirit gets up in Nathan's face. Nathan takes a step back. The spirit says I dunno, Mr.Ferryman! You're so smart, why don't you figure it out for yourself?! PANEL 5: Eddie steps between them, holding their hands over their ears. They shout Guys, please!

  • PANEL 1: Eddie faces Mai, looking at her spirit box. He asks New guy, what's your name? PANEL 2: The ghost crosses his arms and replies Dusty. Dusty Morris. PANEL 3: Eddie puts a hand on their forehead, looking exhausted. They say Cool. Dusty, whatever beef you have with Nate, now ain't the time to be hashin' it out. There's some weird fuckin' cowboy thing that we're pretty sure has been kidnapping ghosts-- PANEL 4: Eddie presses two fingers to their forehead, continuing with And if we're gonna make it out of here without getting kidnapped or shot or suffocated by smoke or crushed by a building or WHATEVER ELSE, we're all gonna have to get along. PANEL 5: That relaxed smile returns to Eddie's face. They do sarcastic jazz hands to punctuate their point and say So lets cut the shit for thirty minutes to an hour, and then we can all have a lil' feelin's chat.
